Why root? I rooted because it allowed me to further optimize my Fire experience a bit and to tweak some program data files. But around 98% of the time I'm running in regular, not rooted, mode.

So let's talk about those tweaks. By rooting, I have been able to block most ads from the browser, speeding my browsing experience. I've been able to "cheat" at a few games. I've been able to get at the WEP/WPA key for any network that I've registered it on, which was very helpful when one of our cats destroyed (by spilling a pint of water) my 11-month-old Mac Air, and I was travelling with a new one.

So there's really no need to root for most people. I'm just pushing the use cases a bit further than most.
