For your setup, I'd recommend an additional NAS box, specifically one by Synology, in which you add paired drives specifically approved for it (inexpensive WD models included).

You'll not only avoid the problems that come with a wired connection (logic board eccentricities and bad resets -- I once saw a PRAM reset on a custom motherboard in a Mac tower take out multiple drives). You'll also enjoy the perks of a really active developers community. Their Android app for my Galaxy S allows me to stream music and films from home. I can also monitor my apartment when I'm away. You can schedule the massive backups to happen when you're asleep or at work and they're completely painless.

I mention Synology NAS boxes because they have excellent synergy with Macs (though they work well with my PC/Linux laptop, too).
