I felt the same way about
Master and Commander, and I love historical fiction. I really wanted to love it, but it was tough going.
Based on the list OP provided, I'd recommend:
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.
March by Geraldine Brooks. (This won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2006.)
