Hilary, the first thing you must consider is what do you want to do with your PE. If for some reason you want to dig into the internals of the operating system then you will have to learn programming and make yourself at home on the google android development site. If, on the other hand, you just want to use the PE then all you need to know are its limitations - usually showing up as newer apps or versions of apps not working.
Although our version of Ermine is based on the phone version of android the PE is not a phone and does not have much of the phone hardware available. This means that any apps that look for specific phone hardware will not run, indeed many of them will not even install.
I have a full size edge and am even more limited than you by being restricted to the original Ermine beta from Entourage. For me it is a tool to do a job and it does that job extremely well. I have on the odd occasion thought about poking about its insides both mechanically and in the programming. I have even gone as far as asking my programmer if she knew anything about android - we repair and maintain computer systems based on the OS/2 operating system so I do know what goes on 'under the hood' on computers. The main reason I haven't gone poking about inside is because the unit is limited to just what it was designed to do with virtually no way of expanding on that which is just the same as a smart phone, the only way to get more advanced features is to upgrade the device itself - something we can't do with the edges.
