Death in a White Tie - Ngaio Marsh
I'm working my way through the "Inspector Alleyn" books in order, and this book, "Death in a White Tie" is #7, published in 1938.
It's the London "season" - the round of tea-parties, balls, and parties, when debutantes (ie, young ladies from high society) "come out" and formally enter society. But blackmail is in the air, and Inspector Roderick Alleyn enlists the aid of his friend, Lord Robert "Bunchy" Gospell, to aid in tracking down the blackmailer. But, just as he is about to reveal the identity of the blackmailer to Inspector Alleyn, Lord Robert is murdered...
This is an absolutely superb detective story. I've seen it described as one of Ngaio Marsh's best, and I have to agree. All the clues are fairly presented to the reader, but the outcome took me completely by surprise.
VERY highly recommended.
