To fix your app problems you should uninstall it and then go to http://www.kobobooks.com/desktop and download the app for the Mac. This version of the desktop should allow you to complete the install without requiring a Kobo. In contrast, the desktop app at www.kobosetup.com requires a Kobo to complete the installation.
