I'm trying not to stress over this, but the non weight bearing part is going to be so hard for him. He and his (very petite) wife live on the side of a hill in a 3 story house. They have a rambunctious 10 month old Doberman and no fence, which means lots of walks. From the sound of your experience, this probably won't be a quick fix.
