Actually, a lot of the perceptible difference in the new kindles is caused by the high specular reflectivity of the front bezels. This requires that they be compared in the same position, at the same angle, from the same viewpoint, or the bezels will appear to be different shades of bright or dark gray, affecting the perceived brightness and contrast of the eInk display.

Also, each display needs to be "exercised" with multiple full flash updates (10 to 12 is recommended) to reduce oil viscosity and to detach and break up zinc oxide clumps, before doing an honest visual comparison.
