Love the RCN series. Picked up the first three from the Baen Free Library and then discovered that they're also available from The Fifth Imperium as the "When the Tide Rises" CD.

They were originally inspired by the Aubrey–Maturin novels (Master and Commander, Post Captain, H.M.S. Surprise, etc), but he indeed uses historical battles to frame his stories
