To clarify the dictionary thing, currently here in Canada the spelling used is mostly British. Back in the 1960s, when we were trying to distance ourselves from the British Empire and came up with our own flag and national anthem, the American spelling was very popular in business and the press. Possibly not using the extra French letters in typesetting was part of it back then. Now we have reverted to mostly British spelling to set ourselves apart from Americans and it no longer has a colonial stigma attached. Curiously, while our newspapers now use British spelling, a lot of Canadian books printed here still use American spelling. At least the Merriam Webster dictionary recognizes both.
