Out of curiosity, for a non-rooted nook, could you do something similar? I know that the browser doesn't work well, and now on 1.1 it is 10 steps to actually pull it up, but if you did, could you pull down an ePub from a website?

My biggest wish list for an eBook reader is integrated Calibre support so that it will access my Calibre server natively (or at least through a web interface) to pull down books over wifi.

I am sure that'll never happen (though a nook CAN use its web browser to pull down books from the Calibre server, but it isn't native integration), but I can dream.
