I believe that you are right when your say "self-perpetuating", but not because self-published authors are buying his work! The more you sell on Amazon, the higher up the search results you come, and the easier you are for others to find and buy.

It seems most unlikely that he's making it up. The figures in the screen shot look right too. I can judge this from comparison with my own titles. I have one hot seller - Kim by Rudyard Kipling. So far this January, it's sold 204 copies in the US. Comparing with his mid-list titles, we're at about the same rank in the paid kindle store (very roughly, 10,000).

His best selling title is around #100 in the paid kindle store. I think he really is taking in tens of thousands of dollars per month at present, and if he says that over Christmas it was $100,000, he's probably right.
