No problems for me. I'm also using Japanese ePubs and no issues at all. Could it be that you don't have Japanese fonts installed? I'm using the Unifont from UniFoundry (the only font, as far as I know, that is free and also supports full 65536 Unicode characters!).

(I've asked that guy to do the experiment for me, before buying the KT myself: my wife is Japanese so I needed a reader supporting Japanese fonts! Sony (!) wasn't able...)
