I've purchased 3 reference books that were in the $15 to $20 range.

I think around 4 fiction books that were between $10 and $14.

Perhaps 30 or 40 in the $3 to $8 range.

Maybe 60 or 70 free or 99 cent ones.

I never purchased first run hardcovers either, I would wait for the paperback or wait for it to be available at the library or rent it. (The library has rentals of some of the more popular books for 25 cents a day.) The hardcovers I own were generally purchased as remainders or used. [The only exception I can remember was the Harry Potter series, I got the last 4 on their day of release.]
