To add to the above: you obviously know your own child best, but I'd think twice before giving an eInk device to a 7-year-old. eInk screens have a thin layer of glass underneath the outer plastic screen, which will fracture if the screen is knocked hard, or twisted. A good case can help to alleviate the risk, but eInk readers are not "child friendly".
