We already have plenty of devices that do that. The Jinke readers (Hanvon & Astak), Netronix Pocketbooks, Azbooka, and Bookeen--pretty much all of them that aren't tied to a specific bookstore--are designed to read ePub, Mobi, PDF (some better than others), txt, and sometimes a couple of other formats like palmDOC .pdb and .fb2.
Most of them support Adobe's DRM, because Amazon refuses to allow anyone to support mobi DRM and any other DRM format, and there are more DRM'd pdfs & epubs than mobi books away from Amazon. (Support for Kindle DRM is not available outside of Amazon.)
