That's a problem with Infra-red technology and I suspect you would have the same issue with the Kindle Touch etc. At least the T1 has hardware buttons as a backup.
My parents never understood why their TV remote would stop working for about 5 minutes after they flipped on their CFL lights. As the bulbs where warming up they put out InfraRed at just the right frequency to overwhelm the IR sensor on the TV
