I have a Sony PRS-600 and I started getting a similar error message when connecting to my device, but the error began immediately after a Calibre update. Before I start digging to figure out how to reformat the internal memory of my Sony reader, I'd like to try to confirm that this is my problem as well.
This is the details in the "cannot connect to device" error message I am getting:
calibre, version 0.8.34
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Does this mean I, too, need to reformat my device?
