I have read both "The Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End" - a sequel but set a couple of hundred years later. I too was disappointed in them after lots of high recommendations. I also found the second one to be almost a carbon copy of the first - same character set-ups, same incredibly evil villain type, hero a brilliant young man who can solve the apparently insoluble architectural problems, and so on.

I think the stories per se are good enough to keep people reading, but I found the characters very two-dimensional. Not books I am keeping - they have gone to the charity shop.

However, that's just my opinion, and I'm sure some things I think are terrific wouldn't do anything at all for others!
