I know this is probably totally the wrong genre for the OP, but Perdido Street Station or The Scar (which can be read in that order, but don't really have to be) are two of the most amazing books I have read ever. I found them profoundly affecting and I don't say that lightly.

Also Sophie's World, but, again, that isn't for everyone!
