B&N's DRM is included in Adobe's software for ereader devices (and software ereaders), but does not need ADE or any any other software. An ebook with B&N's DRM can just be copied to a device, without needing any other software.
Nook devices also support ebooks with Adobe DRM (from other ebooks stores), which of course do need ADE.
All ereader devices using the latest Adobe software, like the new Sony ereader and Koko Touch, are technically able to read B&N DRM ebooks, but most manufacturers have disabled this option.
According to a WSJ article the Nook will get library lending using Wifi somewhere in the beginning of this year.
