On the other hand it should be possible to do a complete reverting back (there exists a back-flashing-file on PRS+-website), and it is in any case possible to do a 99% reverting back to the original Sony firmware with no visible traces left.

Copy of the old firmware:
No, it is not neccessary. Besides, the firmware is not visible on the reader and copying not that simple. Original firmware is included in the Sony-update and the above mentioned 'reflash-file' from the PRS+-website.

I take it that this can work alongside the Sony firmware?
PRS+ is not a complete new firmware. Technically it is an (invisible) addon stored on an user-inaccessible part of the reader-storage. To make it run it is neccessary to alter the Sony software very lowly, leaving it nearly untouched.
In other words: the first PRS+-flash makes a 'jack' in the wall of the Sony firmware and 'connects' it with the main part of PRS+ (which is invisible for you).

My opinion:

The first thing I would do is to put PRS+ onto the reader. Much to win little to loose.

A.
Cheers. Thanks for that - it makes it a lot clearer.
