That was what made it such a big deal. Well, that, and it was a very slow news day.
(And, if you really dig for facts, it turns out it was probably mostly Amazon's fault for a broken system of filtering what could be sold where. The company that put the book up for sale was Canadian, where it was in the public domain, and they said they'd marked it as for sale in Canada only, but Amazon's servers offered it up in the US as well.)
