Elisha Kent Kane, on his second expedition to look for the lost Franklin Expedition, went north through Smith's Sound, wintering a record north along Greenlands north-western coast. After two winters, they abandoned their ice-bound ship and reached the northernmost Danish settlement at Upernavik.
Of particular interest in this work is the description of their interaction with the hitherto isolated polar eskimo communities, and how Kane's party gradually learnt survival skills from them.
