I agree that this whole process can be a pain, but there is a solution to your Adobe authorization issue. Before you do a factory reset, deauthorize your Kobo. Go to Home>Settings>Account. Under Adobe Authorization. press the Deauthorize button. This will presumably decrease your authorized device count with Adobe and prevent you exceeding your limit.
