It turns out I can give up.
Tried WPA - no joy.
Changed the channel - no difference.
Messed with some scary numbers (beacon interval, DTIM) a bit - nothing. Chickened out and changed them back.
Guess I'm waiting until either my router dies or the firmware gets updated again. Assuming it's not a hardware issue.
