My kids enjoyed LivingBooks interactive books on a computer when they were small. There are a lot of similar offerings on the Fire. For very young children, I think this is the best way to encourage an interest in reading.

I *thought* an inexpensive e-ink reader would be a hit with older kids, but, having introduced a Kindle/79 and Fire at a number of events with a lot of kids, I now *know* that they prefer the Fire...even to read a book.

The Fire would be my recommendation. It has a nice e-reader app (in fact, you can load any number of reader apps for different experience/preferences/formats), can play music and other media, and runs other apps (games are popular).

There are four areas where my k/79 beats the fire: Price, Size, Battery Life, and glare/print free screen. None of these matter as much as I thought.
