Two things, which version of the operating system is on your PE and have you tried any other e-mail program?
Have you checked your e-mail and WiFi settings? This may be the cause of your problem - trying to access an e-mail server that is non existent.
On my full size eDGe I use the standard Froyo Email app without any problems.
The best way to get apps is to download the apk file to your PC and transfer it from there to a USB stick and install from the stick on your PE - the added advantage in doing it this way is that you have a backup of the app on the PC should you need it.
