It bugs me too, but I know exactly why it bugs me - it's reminiscent of movie productions, and I know how many of those work...

where Big Name Guy often merely reviews the script, shows up just long enough to sign the paperwork for his producer's credit, gets a check, and then appears at the premiere.
So it comes down to "that James Patterson book is not a James Patterson book" and "that Fancy Producer film is not a Fancy Producer film".
That's not to say that the book (or film) isn't any good, I'm just annoyed by the marketing devices used. Just celebrity endorsement of a different kind.
