Jacques Futrelle, creator of the S F X Van Dusen "Thinking Machine" detective stories, died on the Titanic in 1912. In addition to the many short stories featuring S F X Van Dusen, he wrote a number of shortish novels.
This 40,000 word novelette is set in an unidentified industrial city in an unidentified American State, and follows a young man into city politics as a corruption-buster.
