Never Knew Another by J.M. McDermott, is 1st in his apparently medieval-ish fantasy Dogsland Trilogy, free courtesy of publisher Night Shade Books.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians, not yet free in the UK). Unlikely to show up elsewhere, as it seems NSB has switched their freebie-offering allegiance from B&N to Amazon.

Incidentally, Baen's Webscription store is generally the cheapest and best place to actually buy Night Shade Books' titles, as they only charge $6 for them and they are DRM-free MultiFormat, compared to the $7.99 they end up being in the other stores. Though a good Kobo coupon may equalize matters.
