Thank you for the advice, Troll. The only .flv player that seems to give both sound and video on A10 is QQPlayer.
OK. I identified 2 issues with A10:
1. I have to wiggle the jack of the headphone to get the sound. Even that does not work with some headphones.
2. If I transfer large files from the PC to A10 using USB cable, the connection is frequently severed in the middle.
Is this a general problem with Android machines or specific to A10?
A wireless workaround is provided by the free app "software data cable" & filezilla combination.
