Does anybody know how to get rid of this thing once and for all?

Perhaps you are viewing your archive (stored on the Amazon servers) rather than the books on your Kindle. All ebooks you buy through the Kindle ebook store are stored in your Amazon account, and can be re-downloaded to your Kindle.
It is possible to delete books from your Amazon archive, but only through the Manage Your Kindle section of the settings in your Amazon account.
I suggest you ask any other questions over in the
Kindle forum.
