Sue; if the display shows "Pg 1 of 3" or similar, it means the book your downloaded is in what we call Kobo ePub format or k-ePub. All this means is you are reading page 1 of 3 in a given chapter.
On the Kobo web site if you go to the "My Library" section you should see all the books you have obtained. Next to many of the books will be a blue button labeld "ADOBE EPUB DRM" (or something similar). Clicking that will either download an ePub directly (if the book has NO DRM on it), or, download an ACSM file that when you open in Adobe Digital Editions (or ADE) will download an ePub with DRM.
If you transfer these ePubs to your Kobo using ADE, when you read the book the display will show "Pg 1 of 600"; ie the page you are within the WHOLE book.
