I am intrigued by your second question. I can't think of a good way right now, but there may be one . . .

Your first question is easier: Take a look at Javese's LCD2eink program. I think that will allow you to read Kindle books on the eink side. Another option is to convert the books using Calibre and Apprentice Alf's plugin (google for info, it involves removing the DRM and is ethically questionable so instructions are not allowed in MobileRead).

I do occasionally read books in the Kindle app on the LCD side -- it doesn't seem to me to be all that power-draining. I guess it just depends on how long you'll be away from an electrical outlet.
