So glad to have found this forum!

Used to be a hardcore C/C++ coder, back in the day, but it's been quite a while. Getting a Kindle for xmas provided the impetus to blow the dust off and see how many of the old brain cells are still online. Have a specific application in mind, but will post that elsewhere as soon as I poke around and make sure the question isn't redundant.
