Well, the Dutch male is also to be reckoned with when he's not feeling well. Sixteen days after getting his dentures my father still refuses to chew anything. Bread gets cut up in tiny squares so he can avoid chewing, bananas still gets mashed, etc. My mother, my sister and I are getting very fed up with eating pasta, soup and other soft things. He was actually angry when we ate something different on Christmas day (tortillas) than him (pasta).

In about two weeks' time he's getting a soft filler in his dentures and I think he's going to wait until then to start chewing again.

It was to be expected, he's afraid of even the possibility of pain; when buying shoes he wants them to fit perfectly from the get go and doesn't want to have to wear them in.
