Well, I think this is the whole point of the whole e-reading device "mini -revolution". They seem to be catering to the reading public more than the reference manual public therefore, the design and marketing are geared differently.

Some people may want to read reference material like the latest "How-To" tech book, but, looking at their marketing campaigns on their sites (Amazon, Sony, iRex, Booken, et al.), they really want the reader who wants to curl up with a good novel, not PC repair.

Even Astak, the newest kid on the block, has an image of a woman comfortably reading a good book while sitting in a window with a picturesque urban scene behind her, not trying to learn the ins and outs of Photoshop CS.
