I think the comparison to comics is apt. A lot of comic fans (like me) no longer buy the monthlies. We wait for the trade paperback graphic novel collection instead. We want the whole story in one package, instead of fragments of stories in multiple packages. So it is possible that we're moving away from serial content, culturally speaking.
