IN the end , B&N are going to act in THEIR economic self interst, not in the interest of some hackers. B&N created the NT so that we could buy and enjoy B&N stuff, not so that hackers could use it for everything else but that.
If they go bankrupt, because people don't use the Nook Tablet to buy B&N content-its intended purpose-then NO ONE benefits, because NT buyers will be left with unsupported and discontinued hardware. That's just the way it is. File this under the "That's how captalism works" tab.
I'm not surprised that B&N is taking steps to lock down their tablet. What surprised me is that they took so long.
That said, its not really clear that this a full blooded attempt to lock down their tablet. We'll see.
