I can't remember if I had to do anything with the Sony Reader desktop software to authorise the device, or associate it with my Adobe ID. I think I did, but it was a month ago! On the Mac, the Reader desktop software's built-in help has a section on authorising the device in regions without Sony stores, so maybe check the built-in help.

It might be worth breaking down the problem into 2 steps - get ADE running and authorised, and then get Sony's stuff hooked up.
