Brute force will work, but for the PRS-650 it isn't a great solution.

This may not be what you want, but for the x50 line of Sony devices I use the following metadata plugboard.

Format: device_db
Device: PRS505
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}
Destination field: authors
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}{title}
Destination field: title_sort

This will cause the series to display in the Author line as seen in the attached image.
