Or a lack of actual talent? Not trying to offend anyone here, but there are a lot of free books on indie bookstores/sites that are free for good reason...

If Louis CK's video had been horrible, either with regards to production value or if it hadn't been funny, it wouldn't have sold very well, since word of mouth cuts both ways. It's vital to have a good product if you want to sell a lot of it, regardless of what business model you decide to use, but perhaps even more if you rely on the internet and the people on it to market it for you.
