I don't know about the counts, but I doubt very much that it affects the memory. I have to assume that the shelf entries are like PC shortcuts - just pointers to the actual book, not a duplicate file. However, I could be wrong. If you are right about the count going up for each shelf item, it does make one wonder if they might actually be creating duplicate files, which would be a very odd way to do things.
