For me it's by no means a dealbreaker or even anything close to it...but it's just a minor annoyance that you think they would have thought out.
I can see why on phones it makes sense to always have the lock screen in standard portrait mode (location of microphone, any physical buttons, etc.). However, for the Kindle it can really be oriented in almost any direction, so to me it would have made sense to allow it to work in any orientation.
I should probably submit that feedback tonight.
