So this is more of a 'remove clutter' move, but allows you to still see recently used items. So each time you open something you don't want seen on the carousel you have to remove it again.

It's good middle ground, yes, but it should be configurable. Especially with the favorites shelves right beneath it. I don't need my "favorite" apps in the carousel. And I really don't want web pages there when I have browser bookmarks. You should be able to exclude based on category (books, apps, web pages, videos, music).
