if it's the original kobo one, without Wifi, there's really no problem. They cannot use it directly to download or purchase books. They will have to log in via desktop app. Since the passwords you enter are never stored as plain text, they wont have your account details and be unable to do this

however, Changing your password regularly, to something not easily guessed, is always a smart idea.

Even if it were the WiFi model. I believe the second you change your password with Kobo, the device would no longer be able to connect to their serveres. They will have whatever books are on the device currently to read, But that is about it.

if you use a blackberry with the Kobo App and lose it as asked? I'd be more concerned about the Blackberry and the Data on it!
However, if you ever lost your blackberry itself, Contact your carrier IMMEDIATELY. Blackberry's have fantastic security. I mean industry leading that no other mobile devices have. Your Carrier or RIM themselves can immediately over the network disable a lost blackberry and remotely factory wipe all data, including kobo and it's data off the device. RIM can even force a handheld remotely to brick itself. Losing a blackberry is actually one of the safest devices for the data to lose
