I will add my own encomium to Harry's. This is a wonderful series, and indeed, "corridors of power" is also a phrase in American.

However, I'm going to suggest that if the 11-novel sequence seems a little daunting, The Masters works as a stand-alone novel about a power struggle within academia, and might just be the book that sucked in the reader. (Full disclosure: I'm pretty sure that's what got me!)
