I can assure you they do yank live books. We've had it happen as well. They seem to constantly "adjust" their criteria of what constitutes an acceptable submission, and they don't grandfather in previously-acceptable books.
And I'll also agree with Hitch that Apple requires a lot of very high maintenance for a very small share of the e-book market.
