Thanks dwanthny, I'd realised that, but should have been more explicit in my reply. I was contemplating a "calibre-bin" ebuild, which would wrap the existing calibre binary install and integrate it with the standard Portage Gentoo package management system. Where possible, I prefer to keep all software on my systems managed by Portage.

Since 0.8.12 works perfectly and 0.8.30 does not, with a bit of digging I could probably find the breaking change. Right now no-one seems to consider that very useful, so I'll leave it till I see a reason to find it.
